Samsung Fights Covid-19 with New Antimicrobial Smartphone Cases
July 14, 2020
On June 30, Samsung filed a trademark in several countries for a new antimicrobial coating that has been proven to be effective against Covid-19, the cause of the global pandemic. Although as of yet there is no news of when this new option will hit the market, the antimicrobial coating is expected to be incorporated into Samsung’s smartphone and tablet cases for its most popular products, including many of its Galaxy smartphones.
According to a research report by the University of Arizona, an antimicrobial coating like the one Samsung is seeking to add to its cell phone cases can keep a surface free of coronavirus for up to 90 days. Within two hours of applying the coating, virus particles are decreased 99.9 percent. The coating would also protect the phone from other bacteria as well.
The coating is also being considered for use in public areas that get a lot of traffic and a lot of people touching the same surfaces, such as subway cars, buses and other public transportation. Similar antimicrobial coatings are already used in places like hospitals, where it has been effective in fighting the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
