When a Smartphone Sounds Too Good to Be True

June 03, 2020

As consumers try to come to terms with the new normal, many are looking for ways to save money. Although many parts of the U.S. and the world are reopening, the future is still uncertain, and likely to be until a vaccine is found and the number of worldwide cases of Covid-19 begins to fall.

With the uncertainty comes the need for many consumers to reduce spending and be creative in getting the things you need. Unfortunately, it’s also the time when people can be taken in by false advertisements and products that are too good to be true.

One such example is a new smartphone touted on indiegogo, seeking crowdfunding to get up and running. The phone, called Prometheus, belongs to Brandeis, a startup that claims the new phone will have all the newest bells and whistles of some of the premier smartphones on the market – Snapdragon 865 SoC, 16GB of RAM, and a 108MP main camera – for $499, about half the price of any other smartphone with the same specs. Prometheus would also sport a new shape, and a sapphire crystal glass display.

However, a number of warning bells are ringing, despite the $230,000 the campaign has already gathered from excited fans, likely looking for a cheaper price tag on a product that has become an essential part of their existence. Many experts with backgrounds in smartphone development have dug into the company’s owners and found little in the way of expertise in the sector. Others have pointed out that Brandeis has basically listed all the best components of a smartphone, as if they’ve made a phone out of the most popular specs across the board. Perhaps most alarmingly, the company has disabled refunds on the indiegogo campaign as criticism has increased.

As a retailer, it’s sometimes necessary to help your customers make the most informed choice they can. If you’re able to give them solid information about smartphones that seem too good to be true, they’ll ultimately trust you with helping them find an alternative that may be more expensive than they would like, but won’t fall apart when they try to use it and will stand up to the test of time.
