New Huawei Smartphone Takes Your Temperature

June 01, 2020

As economies across the globe prepare to reopen, trying to figure out how to keep people safe and healthy has become a global conundrum that everyone wants to solve. Technology has already helped pave the way for safely returning to work and reopening stores with a number of innovations, including apps that show when users have been near people who tested positive, and several at-home test options that are still in the works.

Widespread testing has been one of the many hurdles that countries are solving in various ways to try to keep the spread of Covid-19 under control. Huawei, a Chinese smartphone manufacturer, has come up with another solution: a smartphone that takes your temperature.

The new $420 cell phone has an infrared thermometer sensor within its rear-facing camera, so users are able to take their own temperatures before venturing out. Fever is one of the first symptoms of the coronavirus; it is often one of the first indicators that someone has contracted the virus.

It’s unclear whether other smartphone manufacturers will follow suit, but infrared components are already used in smartphones – for example, the iPhone uses it to map a users’ face to create their emoji. Although it wouldn’t be as simple as updating the phone operating system and adding an app, many of the components that are necessary for a smartphone thermometer are already built into current models; it wouldn’t be a stretch for new models to include the new technology.

For U.S. consumers to get their hands on a smartphone with a thermometer, one of two things would have to happen: the sanctions against Huawei would need to be dropped, or another smartphone manufacturer – such as Samsung or Apple – would need to begin including thermometers in their own models.

Still, retailers need to be ready to field these questions from their customers during the coming months, as everyone from governments to businesses to private citizens grapple with finding out the best way to protect themselves. The more you’re able to stay out in front of the newest coronavirus protection tools, the better you’ll be able to serve your clientele.
