Samsung Releases UV Sterilizer for Smartphones and Accessories
August 05, 2020
Samsung has released a new wireless charging device that comes with an extra perk: it kills coronavirus.
The new charger is actually a small box – 7 inches long by 3.77 inches wide by 1.29 inches deep – that simultaneously charges as it sanitizes whatever has been placed in the box using UV sterilizing technology. It’s big enough to fit most cell phones, regardless of their brand. As an added plus, it will also sterilize other objects as well: pens, eye glasses or earphones, for example. Owners can just place what they’d like sterilized in the box, leave it for 10 minutes, and come back to a cleaned object – without a wet or sticky mess. The dual UV lights clean any part of the surface that is exposed to the light within in the box.
The UV Sterilizer is made by Samsung C&T, a partner of the Samsung Mobile Accessory Program. In studies performed by independent certification institutes Intertek and SGS, the sterilizer killed up to 99 percent of bacteria and germs, including Covid-19, E. coli, Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus.
The sterilizer is designed to both charge and sanitize some of Samsung’s largest phones, including the Galaxy S20 Ultra, the Galaxy Note 10+ and others. It will charge any phone that is Qi-compatible.
As of mid-August 2020, the sterilizer is available in India; preorders are being taken in the U.S. for shipment as soon as the sterilizer becomes available.
