The Newest Smartphones with 8 Cameras and 4 Flashes
November 14, 2020
As manufacturers look for new ways to wow consumers, hardware stacking has become the norm. Hardware stacking is just what it sounds like: adding more and more bells and whistles to smartphones to try and outsell competitors and capture and keep customers.
One example that may be considered overkill for most average smartphone photographers. Lens Technology, a Chinese firm that supplies many of the world’s smartphone manufacturers, including Apple and Samsung, filed a patent in China in 2020. The patent shows eight cameras and four flashes on the rear of the phone: two lenses and one flash in each corner.
The patent was approved on October 2, 2020. Unfortunately, there is not yet more information about how the cameras differ—whether they’re a mix of wide angle, telephoto, etc.
Believe it or not, this new patent does not hold the record for the highest number of cameras in a smartphone. In 2018, LG filed a patent for a smartphone with 16 cameras. However, these lenses were all set up in a small block grid at one corner of the back of the phone. To date, the LG phone has yet to hit the market.
